A certain view of the world: short theater plays created by teenagers today

A certain view of the world: very short theater plays created by young people today

Possible or anecdotal, imaginary or credible, the mini plays created by these young people involved in the KPUP Comenius project, explicitly express the triumph of friendship and tolerance, beyond cultural or ethnic boundaries imposed by traditional stereotypes.

The joy of life and the need of friends, capitalized in artistic attempts constitute – they say indirectly - the only way to transcend the barriers of the past and create a united Europe. The young authors of the four plays rather break through or even cancel the contemporary European mood of loneliness, so much emphasized by the contemporary theater, and go beyond our perfunctuary and shallow universe dominated by ideologies, manifesting an open attitude towards other cultures. Because the road to self-knowledge necessarily goes through the reference to the others (e.g. a Lithuanian, a Turk, a Swede, a Romanian).

Like a Prince Charming, the young European leaves on a journey of discovery so that one day, the future adult could understand his or her neighbors, the people to work with and collaborate for the good of the European realm.

In this respect, the small plays aim the knowledge adventure of the EU members and their shift from indifference and reluctance to understanding and acceptance. The theater created by student-artists is able to transform their experience into a game and the game in an act of knowledge. Through it, these young people discover: common origins traced back to the Thracians and the Celts, both belonging to the great family of the Indo-Europeans or some interesting kinship between the Romanian and the Spanish lords and princes; or the life, not easy at all, of the princesses of Versailles – as in " A History Lesson "; or contemporary domestic dramas, but also the power to convert pain into an artistic act as in the case of Monica who is motherless but ready to assume the management of the house and also his father’s inconsolable frustration – as in “The Swedish Way"; the concern for school and performance, but also romantic love interest, as in "Lithuanian and Romanian Girls"; the preoccupation with different prejudices and habits, of a gastronomic kind as well, in Vlad’s case, in“When in Turkey, Do as the Turks Do”.

The great themes of life, consciousness and existence, caught by a flash, are found in all philosophies and literatures of the world: love, friendship, history, pain, school, tradition.

The finding and the understanding of the world may begin by returning to a time when young people took responsibility at an early age, girls were married at 14, and the challenges made life "look not right". The educational function is well understood by these young people, aware that the initiatory approach can not be successful without knowing the past to understand the present, an immanent condition in improving the quality of our life ("A History Lesson").
The relationship with adults - a way of being not only Swedish - means discovering inner resources for confession of love that leads to emotional fulfillment, by overcoming family difficulties and by the conversion of suffering in art.

And what is most important is the feeling these young people want to convey. Their theater is optimistic and it gives confidence and vitality to a world with many problems - not only in communication - offering models through their attitude and approach, in ironic tones: "For your sake, do not get me started!" or in serious, reflective tones: "It’s hard enough to find someone you love and harder to find someone you love who loves you back.!"

Regarding the characters, the central vision is a radiography of the young as a free, rational, open, and sociable person - qualities by which relations between Eastern  and Western Europe are restored and by which common values are re-discovered so that the Europeans could find their place, once again, in universality: the feeling of solidarity, the need for communication, the rejection of discrimination and the acceptance of the one who is different. The youth today can recognize their own image, because it is the mirror created and carried by them.
